Neurological Splinting & Therapy Services

Neurological conditions like stroke and cerebral palsy often lead to muscle shortening due to limited movement and spasticity, a condition of muscle tightness and stiffness. This shortening can worsen after a growth spurt as the muscles struggle to keep up with bone lengthening.

In these conditions, upper limb splints play a crucial role in:

  • Providing prolonged stretch to tight muscles or joints
  • Preventing further muscle shortening or joint contracture
  • Supporting weak muscles
  • Offering sensory input to the upper limbs
  • Ensuring joints are in an optimal position for hand use

After an initial assessment, your hand therapist will help determine the most appropriate splint for you. It is important to note that not all patients with neurological conditions will require a splint.

There are several types of splints available:

  • Resting Splints: Typically worn at night or during rest to stretch muscles and maintain benefits after Botulinum Toxin injections.
  • Functional Splints: These support and correct the positions of the wrist and hand to improve movement and functionality and can be tailored to specific tasks.
  • Hygiene Splints: Palm protectors help maintain healthy skin and hygiene care as contractures progress, with custom neoprene roll styles or prefabricated options being effective for some patients.

If you’re unsure if neurological splinting or therapy will help you or your client please get in touch and speak to Sarah or Kris directly via phone (08) 6372 4776 or email.
