What is De Quervains Tenosynovitis?

De Quervains tenosynovitis is a common condition that is caused by swelling to the tendons that pull the thumb out into extension and abduction (a hitchhiking position). It causes pain with activity and rest to the thumb side of the wrist.

It is sometimes referred to as “Mum Thumb” because it commonly affects new mothers who are using their wrists and hands more than usual to care for their infant.

The prevalence of De Quervain’s tenosynovitis in adults (18–65 years) in the general population is approximately 1.3% of women and 0.5% of men, with peak prevalence at the age of 40–60 years.

What symptoms does De Quervains Tenosynovitis cause?

  • Pain near the base of the thumb
  • Swelling near the base of thumb and wrist
  • Clicking or ‘Stop-and-go’ sensation in the thumb when using it

What is the treatment?

Often a splint is required to help rest the affected thumb tendons. The therapist my also utilise soft tissue massage, education on activity modification, oedema management strategies and taping techniques.
